Writefull

Writefull is the grammar checker that knows what a p-value is. Where general tools like Grammarly are trained on everyday prose, Writefull's models are trained on scientific text, and it lives where researchers actually write: Microsoft Word and, unusually, Overleaf. Publishers use its technology for language checks, which tells you the niche it has carved.

What we like

Domain training matters more than people expect. Writefull will not 'correct' passive voice that journals expect, understands the conventions of methods sections, and suggests phrasing that sounds like published science rather than a blog post. The Overleaf integration is close to unique — LaTeX users have been ignored by every mainstream writing assistant, and getting real language feedback without breaking markup is worth the subscription alone for that crowd. The Sentence Palette, a browsable bank of common academic phrasings drawn from published papers, is an underrated gift for ESL authors staring at 'how do I introduce a limitation.' And at roughly $5/month billed annually, it is among the cheapest tools in the research stack.

Where it falls short

Writefull does language, full stop. There is no discovery, summarization, or citation support, and its general-writing coverage is thinner than Grammarly's — you would not run your emails through it. The product also shows its pre-LLM roots: feedback is suggestion-by-suggestion rather than conversational, and the paraphraser is serviceable rather than impressive next to newer AI writing tools.

Verdict

For manuscript preparation, Writefull is an easy, cheap yes — particularly for ESL researchers and anyone in Overleaf, where it has essentially no competition. It will not replace a general writing assistant or a research copilot, and it is not trying to. Check whether your university already has a license; many do, making the recommendation free.
