What we like

The fundamentals are unmatched at any price, let alone free. The browser connector captures a paper, its PDF, and clean metadata in one click; the Word and Google Docs plugins handle in-text citations and bibliographies across 10,000+ styles without the formatting disasters that haunt manual workflows; the built-in PDF reader with annotations turned Zotero into a genuine reading environment. Being open source and nonprofit means no rug-pulls, no acquisition-driven decay (see: Mendeley), and full data ownership. The plugin ecosystem is where it quietly joins the AI era — community add-ons bolt summarization and chat-with-your-library onto it, and nearly every tool in this category, from Research Rabbit to Scite, treats Zotero sync as table stakes.

Where it falls short

Zotero itself ships no AI: no summaries, no semantic search, no Q&A without third-party plugins of varying quality. The interface is honest 2010s desktop software — perfectly usable, visibly unfashionable. And while local storage is unlimited and free, syncing a serious PDF library across devices pushes you past the 300MB free cloud tier into paid storage (cheap, but a common surprise).

Verdict

Install Zotero regardless of what else you buy. It is the rare tool with no real downside: free, open, better at citation than any commercial rival, and the connective tissue for the whole AI research ecosystem. Start with free local storage, add the $20/year sync tier when your library grows, and layer AI tools on top rather than instead.
