Sourcely is refreshingly honest about the problem it solves: you have already written the essay, and now you need citations. Paste your text, and it returns real academic papers and books that support your claims, complete with summaries and formatted citations. It was built by students, and every design choice reflects that origin.

What we like

The text-in, sources-out interaction is genuinely faster than reverse-engineering Google Scholar queries from your own sentences, and — crucially — the sources are real, pulled from academic databases rather than dreamed up by a language model. The summaries let you sanity-check a source in seconds, credibility and year filters keep obvious junk out, and citation export in standard formats closes the loop. For the specific, common, slightly guilty workflow of citing a finished draft, nothing else is this direct. The interface is simple enough that there is no onboarding to speak of.

Where it falls short

The honest framing cuts both ways: writing first and citing second is a bad research habit, and Sourcely industrializes it. Sources returned for nuanced or contestable claims are frequently adjacent-but-not-quite-supporting, and a student who cites without reading will eventually attach a real paper to a claim it does not make — arguably worse than an obviously fake citation because it survives a surface check. The free credits evaporate quickly, and the tool has no role in deeper research workflows: no extraction, no synthesis, no library.

Verdict

Sourcely does its narrow job well, and for time-pressed undergraduates it will feel like magic. Use it as a discovery shortcut — find candidates, then actually read them — and it is a defensible ~$10/month. Rely on it blindly and it will eventually embarrass you in front of someone who followed the reference. Researchers and graduate students should skip it for Elicit or plain Semantic Scholar.
