What we like

Checking a key paper before you build on it takes thirty seconds and occasionally saves you from embarrassment; seeing "12 contrasting citations" on a foundational reference is the kind of signal nothing else surfaces. Reference Check, which scans your manuscript's bibliography for retracted or heavily disputed papers, should honestly be standard practice before every submission. The Zotero plugin and browser extension put the citation badges where you already work.

Where it falls short

There is no free tier beyond a one-week trial, and ~$20/month is a hard sell for an individual researcher whose university does not subscribe. Classification accuracy, while decent, wobbles on hedged academic prose — a sentence like "in contrast to earlier work, we partially confirm..." can land in the wrong bucket, so you end up reading the snippets anyway. The AI Assistant is serviceable but not the reason to buy; Elicit and Consensus do question-answering better.

Verdict

Scite is a specialist instrument, not an everyday search engine. If you work in fields with active replication debates — psychology, biomedicine, nutrition — its citation-stance data is genuinely irreplaceable and worth the subscription.
