Scholarcy has been summarizing academic papers since before the current AI wave, and that head start shows in its format: instead of a wall of generated prose, each paper becomes a structured flashcard — key findings, methods, limitations, comparisons to prior work, extracted tables, and a linked reference list. The audience is anyone drowning in a reading list: students, PhD researchers, analysts.

What we like

The flashcard structure is the differentiator. A generic chatbot summary tells you roughly what a paper is about; a Scholarcy card tells you what was measured, on whom, what was found, and what the authors admit they could not show — the exact fields you need for triage decisions. Table and figure extraction is a quiet standout; pulling a results table out of a PDF intact saves annoying manual work. The reference extraction with open-access lookup turns each summary into a jumping-off point, and the browser extension means summarizing an open-tab paper is one click. Exports to Word and reference managers slot cards into real workflows rather than trapping them in the app.

Where it falls short

Quality is format-dependent: clean, conventionally structured empirical papers summarize beautifully, while theoretical papers, humanities prose, and scanned or oddly formatted PDFs produce cards that miss the point. The free tier has tightened over the years and now serves mostly as a demo. And with frontier chatbots getting genuinely good at document Q&A, Scholarcy's edge has narrowed — its structure and consistency remain better, but the gap is smaller than it was.

Verdict

If your weekly reading list regularly exceeds your reading time, Scholarcy is a sensible ~$10/month: the structured cards make skim-or-read decisions fast and defensible. Heavy systematic reviewers should look at Elicit instead, which extracts across many papers at once. But as a personal reading accelerator, Scholarcy still does its one job better than improvised chatbot workflows.
