What we like

Collection-based discovery is the right model for how research actually happens. A literature review is not one search; it is months of accumulating papers, and Research Rabbit's recommendations improve as your collection grows. The earlier/later/similar work views let you walk a field's timeline in either direction, and the author networks are handy for figuring out who the actual players in a subfield are. The Zotero sync is the workflow glue — pull a Zotero folder in, explore, push new finds back — and it works better than most academic-tool integrations. And the price is unbeatable: no caps, no premium nagging, genuinely free.

Where it falls short

The interface is the main tax. The multi-panel, ever-expanding column layout becomes cluttered fast, and large collections make the graphs sluggish and hard to read — Connected Papers' single clean map is far more legible for one-off orientation. There is no AI summarization, Q&A, or extraction; this is a discovery tool only, and users now expect at least summaries. The free-forever model also raises the fair question of long-term sustainability.

Verdict

Every active researcher should have a Research Rabbit account — at zero cost, the alerts and collection-based recommendations alone justify the signup. Treat it as your ongoing-discovery layer: Zotero for storage, Research Rabbit for finding what is next, and something like Elicit when you need synthesis. Its interface will occasionally frustrate you; its price never will.
