Power Automate's unfair advantage is that it's already there. If your organization runs Microsoft 365, some level of workflow automation is included in licenses you're paying for anyway, and the full Premium tier costs $15 per user per month — a fraction of standalone RPA or iPaaS pricing. That distribution, more than any feature, explains its ubiquity.

What we like

The Microsoft-stack integration is genuinely deep: triggering flows from SharePoint changes, Teams messages, Outlook emails, or Dynamics records works with a fidelity third-party tools can't match. Copilot has changed the authoring experience — describing a workflow in plain language and getting a working draft flow lowers the barrier for the business analysts who were always Power Automate's real audience. Having desktop RPA flows in the same product is quietly significant too; organizations get a legitimate on-ramp to legacy-app automation without a six-figure UiPath contract. AI Builder handles document extraction and text classification for common cases.

Where it falls short

Licensing is the running joke of the Power Platform community: standard versus premium connectors, per-user versus per-flow plans, and run limits form a maze that regularly surprises teams with upsells mid-project. The expression language turns simple-sounding logic into nested syntax that frustrates non-developers, error handling is clunky, and debugging complex flows is slower than in dedicated tools like Make or n8n.

Verdict

For Microsoft-centric organizations, Power Automate is the obvious default — start with what your licenses include and expand deliberately, reading the licensing docs before you architect anything. Mixed-stack startups and non-technical solo users will be happier with Zapier or Make, where the pricing is legible and the connectors are built for the broader SaaS world.
