Litmaps turns a literature review into a living map: papers plotted on a timeline, connected by citations, growing as you add seeds and run gap-filling searches. Where Connected Papers gives you a snapshot and Research Rabbit gives you a feed, Litmaps is trying to be the place your literature review actually lives for the duration of a thesis.

What we like

The timeline layout is the best visual decision in this category — arranging papers chronologically with citation links makes a field's development instantly readable in a way force-directed blobs never quite manage. The workflow is deliberately review-shaped: seed with your known key papers, run discovery to find what you missed, keep the map monitored so new publications surface automatically. That monitoring matters; literature reviews go stale between submission and defense, and Litmaps quietly solves that. Import support (Zotero, BibTeX, DOIs) is solid, and shared maps are genuinely good artifacts for supervision meetings — a supervisor can see coverage gaps at a glance.

Where it falls short

The competitive landscape is brutal for a paid tool here. Research Rabbit does collection-based discovery free; Connected Papers does one-shot maps for less. Litmaps' free tier is too constrained to be your main tool, so realistically this is a ~$10/month decision, and the discovery engine is not obviously stronger than the free rivals — output quality leans heavily on choosing good seeds. There is also no summarization or Q&A layer, which is increasingly the baseline expectation.

Verdict

Litmaps is the most polished way to build and maintain a visual literature review, and PhD students who like structure — or need to show their coverage to a committee — will get their $10/month back in clarity. Casual users should start with Research Rabbit and Connected Papers and only upgrade to Litmaps if the map-maintenance workflow clicks for them during the free tier.
