Inciteful

Inciteful is the scrappy, free entrant in the citation-mapping category — an independent project that quietly does two things nothing else does quite as well. Paper Discovery builds a citation network from as many seed papers as you like, then ranks the most important papers, authors, and venues in that network. The Literature Connector takes two papers and finds the citation paths between them.

What we like

Multi-seed discovery is the right abstraction for real literature reviews. Where Connected Papers locks you to one seed per graph, Inciteful lets you start from your five known key papers and iteratively fold promising results back into the network, sharpening the map each pass — a genuinely review-shaped workflow. The Literature Connector is the hidden gem: for interdisciplinary work ("how does the fairness-in-ML literature connect to organizational-justice research?") it produces bridges you would never find by searching either field alone. Everything is free, unlimited, account-optional, and methodologically transparent, with BibTeX import and Zotero support covering workflow basics.

Where it falls short

This is an indie project and looks like one. The interface is utilitarian, the graphs less legible than Connected Papers' polished maps, and there are no summaries, alerts, collections, or collaboration features — you get network analysis and nothing else. Being essentially a one-person effort, development moves slowly and long-term continuity is a fair concern for anyone building habits around it.

Verdict

Inciteful earns a permanent bookmark for two specific moments: starting a literature review from several known papers, and bridging two literatures. In those moments it beats its paid competitors outright, and it costs nothing to keep in reserve. It will not anchor your research workflow — pair it with a reference manager and a discovery tool — but as a free specialist instrument, it is easy to recommend.
