What we like

The core insight is that similarity beats citation-chasing. Because graphs are built from co-citation and bibliographic coupling, Connected Papers surfaces closely related work that never cites your seed paper — parallel research traditions, competing methods, papers separated by terminology. The prior-works and derivative-works views give you a field's ancestry and descendants in two clicks. The interface needs no tutorial, loads fast, and the Academic plan at ~$6/month is priced like the utility it is rather than a platform play. For a first-week PhD student or an engineer doing prior-art scouting, the time-to-orientation is unmatched.

Where it falls short

The one-seed-paper model is both the charm and the ceiling. Broad literature reviews need multiple graphs stitched together mentally, and there is no way to grow a graph from an entire collection the way Research Rabbit allows. The free tier's monthly graph cap is tight enough that any regular user must pay. And it ends at visualization — no notes, no folders, no Zotero sync — so it slots into a workflow rather than anchoring one.

Verdict

Connected Papers is a superb single-purpose tool. If you enter unfamiliar literatures more than a few times a year, the Academic plan pays for itself in saved orientation time, and the free tier covers everyone else. Use it for the map, Research Rabbit for ongoing discovery, and a proper reference manager for everything after.
