While UiPath grew through a sprawling on-prem ecosystem, Automation Anywhere rebuilt itself as a cloud-native platform — bots are designed, deployed, and managed from a browser, which simplifies infrastructure for organizations that don't want to babysit orchestration servers.

What we like

The cloud architecture is a real operational advantage: upgrades, scaling, and access management work like modern SaaS instead of enterprise middleware. Document Automation is the standout capability — AI extraction on invoices, purchase orders, and claims performs well on the messy, semi-structured paperwork that dominates finance shared services, which is where much of RPA's ROI actually lives. The Bot Store marketplace shortens time-to-value with prebuilt automations for common systems, and the AI Agent Studio direction — LLM agents for judgment calls, deterministic bots for execution — mirrors where the industry is credibly heading.

Where it falls short

The ecosystem gap with UiPath is tangible: fewer trained developers on the market, fewer community answers when something breaks, fewer third-party resources. Pricing is enterprise-only in practice; the entry packs exist, but meaningful deployments require custom contracts and a center-of-excellence mindset. And the same RPA caveat applies here as everywhere — UI-level automations break when interfaces change, so maintenance is a permanent line item.

Verdict

Automation Anywhere belongs on every enterprise RPA shortlist, and organizations prioritizing cloud architecture and document-heavy finance processes may reasonably pick it over UiPath. But it is a considered enterprise purchase, not a tool you try on a whim — SMBs and API-rich environments should use integration platforms instead and leave RPA to the legacy-system problems it was built for.
