Speechify

Speechify's founder built it because his dyslexia made reading painful, and that origin still defines the product: it turns anything with text into listenable audio, everywhere you encounter text. The marketing is loud and the celebrity voices are a gimmick, but underneath is the most complete listening tool on the market.

What we like

Coverage is the strength. Browser extension, iOS, Android, desktop — and within them, web articles, PDFs, emails, Google Docs, even photos of book pages via OCR. The premium voices matter more than they seem: at two hours of listening a day, the difference between a robotic voice and a natural one is the difference between abandoning the habit and keeping it. Speed ramping is well designed, nudging you from 1.2x toward 3x as your ear adapts, and cross-device sync means an article started on desktop finishes on your commute.

Where it falls short

The free tier is essentially a trailer — the voices you'd actually want to live with require Premium, and Premium bills annually at $139, a chunky commitment for the undecided. Long-document navigation is weaker than dedicated readers like Voice Dream, and academic PDFs with footnotes and multi-column layouts produce jumbled reading order. Pronunciation of technical terms and names is hit-or-miss with no user-level fix.

Verdict

If listening is or could become a major way you consume text — commuters, students facing hundreds of pages a week, anyone with dyslexia or ADHD — Speechify Premium is worth the annual fee and pays for itself in recovered hours. If you just occasionally want an article read aloud, your browser and phone already do that for free. Try the free tier for a week; you'll know quickly which camp you're in.
