Speak is built on an uncomfortable truth about language apps: you can maintain a three-year Duolingo streak and still freeze when a waiter asks you a question. What we like

The method works on the skill that matters. Lessons drill spoken patterns until they're automatic, then push you into roleplays and free conversations where the AI responds naturally and flags your errors without the social cost of embarrassing yourself in front of a human. The feedback is specific — which word you mangled, which tense you missed — and mistakes feed a personalized review queue. It's the closest an app has come to replicating a patient tutor's feedback loop, and its dominance in the Korean and Japanese English-learning markets was earned on results, not marketing.

Where it falls short

Language coverage is narrow: English learners are first-class citizens, Spanish and French are solid, and beyond that the catalog thins fast. There's no sustainable free tier, so it's a real subscription decision at roughly $20/month. And the early curriculum's repetition — say it, say it again, now in a sentence — is effective but monotonous for learners accustomed to gamified variety.

Verdict

If your goal is speaking a supported language rather than accumulating streaks, Speak is the best app-based option available and cheaper than a single weekly tutoring session. Pair it with Duolingo or Anki for vocabulary breadth if you like, but let Speak carry the speaking. For its supported languages, this is the one we'd pay for.
