It started as an SEO tool and has grown into a suite spanning keyword research, competitor intelligence, site audits, backlinks, PPC research, social scheduling, and AI content tools. If you make money from search — as an agency, an affiliate, or an in-house team — it is one of the two platforms everyone eventually evaluates.

What we like

The breadth is genuinely useful rather than bloated. Being able to jump from a keyword gap analysis to a competitor's ad copy history to your own site audit without switching tools compresses hours of work into minutes. The Keyword Magic Tool remains one of the best keyword databases anywhere, and intent classification saves a lot of manual sorting. Position tracking is granular down to zip-code level, which matters for local SEO. The AI additions — content scoring, ContentShake, AI report summaries — are practical rather than gimmicky.

Where it falls short

Pricing is the persistent complaint. $139.95/month for Pro is just the entry point: extra users, the .Trends competitive intelligence add-on, and local SEO features all cost more, so real-world bills often land at double the sticker price. The interface has accumulated twenty years of features and it shows — new users routinely get lost. And like every SEO platform, its traffic numbers are estimates; treat them as relative signals, not gospel.

Verdict

For agencies and serious in-house teams, Semrush is worth the money and usually pays for itself with a single recovered ranking or a well-researched campaign. Solo bloggers and side-project owners should start with the free tier or a cheaper alternative like SE Ranking, and upgrade only when search revenue justifies it. If you compare it against Ahrefs, pick Semrush for breadth and PPC data, Ahrefs for backlink depth.
