What we like

The workflow economy is the selling point. Record a remote interview in the browser with per-speaker tracks, hit Magic Dust to clean noise and even out levels, then edit by deleting sentences from the transcript instead of scrubbing waveforms — a rough cut that took an evening now takes an hour. Magic Dust deserves its name; it turns a decent USB mic in an untreated room into something listeners won't complain about. Voice cloning for patching a flubbed sentence saves the classic re-record dance, and guests joining via link with zero installs removes a real friction source.

Where it falls short

Podcastle does everything well and nothing best. Descript's editing is deeper and more reliable for surgical work; Riverside's video capture and progressive upload are safer for irreplaceable interviews. Long multi-guest sessions occasionally hit sync or upload hiccups, which argues for local backups on important recordings. The free tier works for experiments but a weekly show will hit its walls within a month.

Verdict

For podcasters starting out or consolidating a messy toolchain, Podcastle at $11.99/month is the best bang-for-buck production suite going — it replaces two or three subscriptions adequately. Shows where a single lost recording is a catastrophe, or video-first productions, should still pay the Riverside premium. Everyone else can pocket the difference.
