Mintlify's insight was that developer documentation is a product surface, not a chore, and most companies were shipping an ugly one. What we like

The out-of-box quality is the headline. Navigation, search, dark mode, mobile layout, code tabs — everything that takes weeks to get right in a self-hosted docs framework is simply done. The AI assistant grounded in your docs is more than a gimmick; it answers user questions with citations and measurably deflects support tickets. Generating an interactive API playground straight from an OpenAPI spec removes one of the most tedious jobs in developer relations, and because everything is docs-as-code, writers and engineers collaborate through normal pull requests.

Where it falls short

The pricing curve is the main complaint: free is fine for a side project, but the jump to Pro at roughly $150 a month stings for early-stage teams, and costs climb from there. Deep customization hits walls that Docusaurus never would — you are ultimately renting a theme. And putting a core piece of developer experience on a hosted platform is a lock-in bet some infrastructure teams refuse on principle.

Verdict

If documentation quality affects your conversion or support load — true for nearly every dev-tool company — Mintlify is worth the money and the fastest path to genuinely excellent docs. Choose self-hosted only if you have unusual customization needs or an allergy to SaaS dependencies.
