Our take on JetBrains AI Assistant
For the millions of developers who live in IntelliJ, PyCharm, or WebStorm, the AI assistant question was always awkward: the best AI tools kept pulling people toward VS Code forks. JetBrains AI Assistant, now bundled with a free tier in IDE licenses and paired with the Junie agent, is JetBrains' increasingly credible answer.
What we like
The integration is the selling point, and it is real. Because the assistant sits on top of JetBrains' famous static analysis, its refactorings and test generation understand your project's actual structure โ types, usages, frameworks โ rather than guessing from open files. Junie benefits from the same foundation and is at its best on well-scoped tasks in large Java or Kotlin codebases, where it navigates like someone who has read the whole project. Including a free AI tier with every IDE license was the right move, and letting users pick between JetBrains models, GPT, and Claude means you are not stuck when one provider has a bad month.
Where it falls short
The credit quota system is the top complaint: it is hard to predict what consumes credits, and heavy Junie use burns through the Pro allowance quickly. The agentic experience, while improving fast, still trails Cursor in speed and polish. And obviously, none of this matters if you are not a JetBrains user โ there is no VS Code story at all.
Verdict
If you already pay for a JetBrains IDE, enabling AI Assistant is a no-brainer and AI Pro at roughly $10 a month is fair value. Switching to a JetBrains IDE just to get it makes less sense โ but for the loyal user base, this is now good enough that defecting to Cursor is no longer the obvious play.
Frequently asked questions
How much does JetBrains AI Assistant cost?
A free AI tier with limited credits is now bundled into JetBrains IDE licenses. AI Pro costs about $10 per month (less on annual billing) and raises quotas; AI Ultimate at around $30 per month adds the largest quotas for heavy Junie usage.
Is JetBrains AI Assistant better than GitHub Copilot?
Inside a JetBrains IDE, its integration is tighter โ refactorings, test generation, and completions use the IDE's own code model. Copilot's raw completions are competitive, so the deciding factor is usually how much you value native IDE features.
What is Junie?
Junie is JetBrains' autonomous coding agent. You give it a task, and it plans, edits multiple files, runs tests, and presents the result for review โ similar in spirit to Cursor's agent mode but built on JetBrains' code analysis.
Does it work in VS Code?
No. JetBrains AI Assistant is exclusive to JetBrains IDEs like IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand, and Rider. VS Code users should look at Copilot, Cursor, or Cline instead.
