Gradescope solves a problem invisible to students but existential to instructors: grading 400 exams consistently without losing a week of your life. Now under the Turnitin umbrella, it's become standard infrastructure in university STEM departments, and its AI-assisted grading is quietly one of the most practically useful applications of machine learning in education.

What we like

Answer grouping is the headline act. Scan a stack of handwritten exams and Gradescope clusters similar responses — grade one representative answer and the score propagates to the group. For a common wrong answer shared by eighty students, that's eighty grading decisions collapsed into one. Dynamic rubrics are the sleeper feature: change a rubric item's point value mid-grading and it recalculates every already-graded submission, which makes fairness across multiple TAs actually achievable. The programming autograder, running instructor test suites against student code, is robust and widely trusted.

Where it falls short

Pricing is institutional and opaque — there's no meaningful path for an individual tutor or small school to just sign up at a listed price. The AI grouping degrades on long free-form responses, so essay-heavy humanities courses see far less benefit than problem-set-driven STEM courses. And the interface, while functional, feels a generation old; onboarding a rotating cast of TAs each semester has real friction.

Verdict

If you teach large STEM courses and your institution licenses Gradescope, using it well is one of the highest-leverage time investments available — instructors routinely reclaim entire days per exam cycle. Humanities instructors and those outside institutional licensing should temper expectations. Within its lane, it's the best tool of its kind.
