Formula Bot

Millions of people fight formula syntax weekly, and this scratched the itch so directly that the product has since expanded into a general spreadsheet AI with analysis, charts, and add-ins.

What we like

The core loop remains excellent. Text-to-formula handles the lookups, conditionals, and date arithmetic that constitute most real-world spreadsheet pain, and the reverse direction — paste a colleague's inscrutable nested formula, get a plain-English explanation — is arguably even more valuable, doubling as on-the-job Excel education. The add-ins matter because context-switching kills utility; generating and inserting formulas inside Sheets beats a copy-paste round trip. At around $9/month, the math is easy for anyone who loses even an hour a week to formula wrangling. SQL and regex generation are handy bonuses from the same describe-it-in-English muscle.

Where it falls short

The strategic problem is obvious: Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini now do text-to-formula natively inside Excel and Sheets, and every general chatbot does it free in another tab. Formula Bot's moat has narrowed to price, focus, and serving users whose employers have not bought Copilot. The expansion features — data analysis, chart generation — are serviceable but visibly thinner than dedicated tools like Julius. And complex formulas still merit testing; correctness degrades with nesting depth.

Verdict

If you or your team live in spreadsheets without Copilot or Gemini licenses, Formula Bot is a cheap, focused productivity purchase that pays for itself quickly. If you already have native AI in your office suite, you probably do not need it. It is a good tool in a category the platforms are steadily absorbing — buy it for the gap it fills today, not as a long-term platform.
